IN THE SPOTLITE: EMELI SANDE

EMELI SANDE

Emeli Sande (Adele Emeli Sande) is a Scottish singer/songwriter, who has recently released her album "Our Version of Events" in February of 2012. She was honored with the opportunity to perform in not only the Opening but also the Closing ceremonies of the 2012 London Olympics.

Emeli grew up with a strong desire to sing, drafting her first song by age 11, titled "Tomorrow Starts Again". By age 15, she was performing in competitions and singing gospel at MTV's Camden Studios. Through a chain of events Emeli ultimately ended up connecting with music producer/writer Naughty Boy, who had previously worked with such artists as Ms Dynamite and Bashy. Together they created songs for multiple artists such as Chipmunk, Cheryl Cole, and Tinie Tempuh.

Most recently Emeli Sande has released her first singles off of her new album. They consist of Heaven, Daddy, and Read All About It. Heaven, equipped with a fast beat, layered with sweet horns, and sprinkled with Emeli Sande's crisp vocals, creates an angelic euphoric melody. By the time this track ends I'm left feeling like I'm floating to Heaven. "Then I'm gone." Read All About It manages to quickly grab my attention. Simply a piano and vocals (to start), yet powerful enough to evoke emotion and inspiration. The song is able to embody the lyrics, it sounds like it's reaching and fighting, breaking through, suddenly screaming and shouting by the end, finally finding its voice.

An honorable mention is her track titled Easier in Bed.  Smooth, sultry, and seductive, this track is somewhat reminiscent of late 80's (early 90's) R&B. Packed with emotionally powered lyrics, it's easily relatable "when the physical is all we have left" in relationships.

Emeli Sande is gifted in making music transcend. She is not your average artist. She is able to connect the lyrics to the music, and transfer her emotion to us through song. Emeli Sande is the definition of ART. But don't take my word for it, you can "read all about it".

Sincerely, Me

  1. This is an excellently written piece. I'm sure if Emeli herself could read it, she'd be at a loss as to who you're describing; you make her music sound out of this world!

    I want more, more, more!

  2. I love her song "River.." I heard it on The Game and I just love how she compares the different aspects of a river to supporting another person. It's my ringtone right now

IN THE SPOTLITE: LUKE JAMES

LUKE JAMES    Well, well, well I must say Luke James "I Want You" in my collection of great music. This man can sang, if you don't know you better ask somebody.   Representing New Orleans, this new found success has been a long time coming for Luke.  After a trio attempt didn't pan out, he landed the opportunity to sing backup for Tyrese, which led to a record deal for the duo 'Luke and Q'. But once again, that path was cut short. Yet, that didn't discourage him. He went on to assist in writing songs for artists such as Justin Beiber, Brittany Spears, Keri Hilson, and  Brandy.  Recently, he also appeared in Beyonce's video for "Run The World (Girls)". Now, the doors have opened again for him and this time he is going at it solo, which ultimately might be just what he needed. Luke James exudes sincerity, not only in his music but in his personality as well.  He doesn't want to just simply make songs that s...

If I stand at the toilet to piss, Does that make me a man? If I sit, does it make me less than? If I dye my hair blonde, color my eyes blue, and rob my skin of its natural brown pigmentation Will that make me Caucasian? If I don't, am I then African? If I yell "Hallelujah!" while giving up half of my check, stomach still queasy from the club the night before, Will 'He' save me? If I, being unbaptized, die while saving another's life, Is it just 'to Hell' with me? If my skin is burned from a fire and barely hanging on  for dear life, Does that make me ugly? If not, then why doesn't anyone see me? Oh they do stare, but they don't SEE me. If my body is s...
