"It's just a figure of speech!"

It's funny the way that we often learn things in language and communication, without realizing what it is that we actually learned. Idioms have become so common that even kids understand the meanings of many of them. Idioms assist in the flow of figurative language, but can often be lost in translation; meaning that others who didn't grow up in that culture might not be able to connect the dots. Below I have listed a few. Feel free to join in with others that you may know.
"to throw a monkey wrench in the plans"
"you put your foot in it" (referring to cooking)
"you put your foot into your mouth this time"
"you don't have a pot to piss in, or a window to throw it out of"
"i'll be a monkey's uncle"
"to bite one's tongue"
"curiosity killed the cat"

"the best of both worlds"
"he wants to have his cake, and eat it too"
"on the fence"
"the last straw"
"a piece of cake"
"a walk in the park"
"woke up on the wrong side of the bed"
"brownie points"
"make ends meet"
"pull your weight"
"under the weather"
"throwing in the towel"

What idioms, or sayings, do you know?
I love idioms and phrases, especially the older ones. But I absolutely despise the words that are overused. The sad thing about them though is that they become so ingrained in your speech, that you can find no other words to amply describe a similar feeling. For example, "what more can we bring to the table?" I hate when people use this expression with a passion, but I have yet to come up with any other phrase to replace it.
ReplyDeleteSome of my favourite sayings are:
"...and call that George"
"Que sera sera!" (What will be, will be)
"Crapaud smoke yuh pipe"
I try to incorporate phrases as much as I can in everyday speech, but I don't always remember. I just think these phrases contain much more meaning than other words do. It's like they already have an established meaning, so you don't have to explain your situation, just use the appropriate phrase. So it's like ready-made communication lol
Um...it's been 5 weeks. Patiently waiting for new posts. Please and thank you.
