You Hit Like A Girl

You Hit Like A Girl   ~ The Dilemma of The Urban Black Female                 I’ll never forget a situation in Spike Lee’s movie “Malcolm X”, which turned out to be the most memorable analysis in the entire movie for me.   Malcolm X, played by Denzel Washington, was dating an educated, sweet and shy Black girl named Laura.   Although she gave him the okay to seduce her, he declined because he felt that she was too good for him and he didn’t want to tarnish her.   Good guy, right? Not quite. Instead he dumps (or saves) her and gets with an experienced and lustful White woman named Sophia.   To make a long story short, Laura ends up becoming a prostitute. Why, you ask?   Because she wanted to be desired as Malcolm X had desired Sophia.   It didn’t matter that he didn’t want to ruin her. What ultimately mattered was that he wanted the other more sexual woman. And thus she became her, or something close to it.   This brings us to the dilemma of the urban Black female.

IN THE SPOTLITE: EMELI SANDE

EMELI SANDE Emeli Sande (Adele Emeli Sande) is a Scottish singer/songwriter, who has recently released her album "Our Version of Events" in February of 2012. She was honored with the opportunity to perform in not only the Opening but also the Closing ceremonies of the 2012 London Olympics. Emeli grew up with a strong desire to sing, drafting her first song by age 11, titled "Tomorrow Starts Again". By age 15, she was performing in competitions and singing gospel at MTV's Camden Studios. Through a chain of events Emeli ultimately ended up connecting with music producer/writer Naughty Boy, who had previously worked with such artists as Ms Dynamite and Bashy. Together they created songs for multiple artists such as Chipmunk, Cheryl Cole, and Tinie Tempuh. Most recently Emeli Sande has released her first singles off of her new album. They consist of Heaven, Daddy, and Read All About It. Heaven , equipped with a fast beat, layered with sweet ho

IN THE SPOTLITE: LUKE JAMES

LUKE JAMES    Well, well, well I must say Luke James "I Want You" in my collection of great music. This man can sang, if you don't know you better ask somebody.   Representing New Orleans, this new found success has been a long time coming for Luke.  After a trio attempt didn't pan out, he landed the opportunity to sing backup for Tyrese, which led to a record deal for the duo 'Luke and Q'. But once again, that path was cut short. Yet, that didn't discourage him. He went on to assist in writing songs for artists such as Justin Beiber, Brittany Spears, Keri Hilson, and  Brandy.  Recently, he also appeared in Beyonce's video for "Run The World (Girls)". Now, the doors have opened again for him and this time he is going at it solo, which ultimately might be just what he needed. Luke James exudes sincerity, not only in his music but in his personality as well.  He doesn't want to just simply make songs that s

My 5 Biggest Pet Peeves

We all have them. Some are petty and some are understandable, and some are just plain ridiculous. I like to think that mine are a happy medium of all three. Enjoy! :-) 1.)   BEING MISUNDERSTOOD! Have you ever gotten so frustrated because someone just seems to completely misunderstand you? I try very hard to be clear and precise because I feel that miscommunication is a huge problem in many of our interactions. But what I've learned is that we can't really make others understand things exactly as we do, too many other things are brought to the table.  I just hate for others to think that I mean one thing, when I actually mean something else. Do you know what I mean?  :-)  2.)  WHOLE SENTENCES WRITTEN L!K3 +H!5! Ok, I probably didn't even do that right, but I'm sure that you get my point. I'm happy that you're happy in your cleverness, however, it takes us outsiders forever to try to "decipher the code". By the time I figure it ou

Ways to Keep the Fire Burning: Romance 101

Romance often gets lost in the everyday hustle and bustle of life.  This especially tends to happen when you're working parents, with romance often getting dwindled down to just cuddling. BORING! That is about as romantic as watching paint dry is fun!!! Oh this field definitely requires much more effort. You can play it safe and keep it traditional with the usual expressions of love or you can opt to be different and get your own creative juices flowing.  Either way, just try to make it fun and something that the person has to look forward to. Below I have listed a few ideas to help to get you started on your quest to being more romantic. Feel free to leave your own stories or suggestions as well. Good luck! 1.) FLOWERS Flowers are usually a very easy way to produce a smile on someone's face. In my opinion, the type of flowers should depend on the type of  person. A traditional person may prefer a dozen red roses, while a more radical person ma

In The Spotlite: Iggy, Azealia, & Snow!

In the Spotlite this time are three up and coming female rappers. A common thread shared among all three is that they don't exactly sound the way that they may appear, or the way that they'd be expected to sound !  Watch your back Nicki Minaj and hold the crown tight, because these wolves are coming for you, fully dressed in sheep clothing! Iggy Azalea Up first is Iggy Azalea.  She packs a mean punch in her hardcore lyrics.  Her flow somewhat sounds reminiscent of Bubba Sparxxx, in "My World".  She's a bad girl with sex appeal, and not to mention a pretty famous guy to support her. Recently signed to T.I.'s label Grand Hustle Records, Iggy now has the chance to show whether her bite is as big as her bark. Just one question...Aye mate, where is her Australian accent?! Oh did I forget to mention that she's from AUSTRALIA?! Azealia Banks Up next is Miss Azealia Banks representing Harlem, New York. Versatility seems to be her superpow

"Stabbed in the Back" ~ Idiom definitions

"It's just a figure of speech!" id·i·om /ˈidÄ“É™m/ Noun: A group of words established by usage as having a meaning not deducible from those of the individual words (e.g., raining cats and dogs). A form of expression natural to a language, person, or group of people: "he had a feeling for phrase and idiom". It's funny the way that we often learn things in language and communication, without realizing what it is that we actually learned. Idioms have become so common that even kids understand the meanings of many of them. Idioms assist in the flow of figurative language, but can often be lost in translation; meaning that others who didn't grow up in that culture might not be able to connect the dots. Below I have listed a few. Feel free to join in with others that you may know. "to throw a monkey wrench in the plans" "you put your foot in it" (referring to cooking) "you put your foot into

I Brought You Into This World...

And I'll take you out! TOUGH LOVE Parenting is often a topic of debate. "Spare the rod, spoil the child" and "hitting teaches hitting" are often heard in reference to disciplining children. So the dilemma is should we show tough love but risk developing an aggressive and abusive individual or tender love but risk encouraging inappropriate behavior as well as spoiled and bratty attitudes? Perhaps a mixture of both can smooth it out, but how do we decide when and   what requires which?    WHICH WILL YOU CHOOSE, TOUGH LOVE OR TENDER LOVE? TENDER LOVE                                                                                     ~Sincerely, Me

What Means The World To You?!

"What means the world to you? My money, my doe, my hoes, my clothes..." ~Cam'Ron I find myself wondering about this from time to time. Not only about myself but in reference to others as well. What matters most to us in the world. Sometimes we think that we know, until faced with certain situations that leave us walking away with new understandings of things. Years ago when I was younger (and dumber lol) I probably would have said sneakers, gold jewelry, and my family. My mindstate was, and still is in some ways, set on looking good and feeling good. If those things weren't in order then most likely others things in my life weren't as well. I don't think that it was so much that I was so materialistic, but that I put alot of my self worth into those things. Now, after experiencing life more, my perception of some things has changed. Below I will break down how I feel about a few things that are often held to high standards. Marriage/Love - As
